Transport

There is very little public transport in Iraqi Kurdistan so the most common way to get around is by taxi.

Share Taxis

The cheapest option is to share a taxi with local people. In each city there are waiting places called garajs where you can sit and wait for other people heading for the same destination. Ask for directions for say "Zahok garaj". Sometimes it is necessary to catch a taxi to the appropraite garaj. Just flag one down.

The drivers are often reckless. See the safety section for more information.

Bicycle

Bicycles are not common but some cycle tourists have braved the roads.

Hitch-hiking

Some foreigners hitch-hike but it involves the same risks as anywhere else in the world.

Driving

The International Driver's License is not accepted in Kurdistan. If you want to drive you will have to go to the police station, where you can show your current driver's license and be issued a permit. This permit will be valid for one month and it is renewable for additional one-month periods at a time.
